A Cheat's Dinner Party Dessert

Strawberry & Mascarpone Dacquoise

Vanilla-flavoured mascarpone and strawberry slices sandwiched between thin sheets of moist almond meringue (the only component that you need to bake for a total of twelve short minutes). Easy enough to make and bound to please.

Mango Jelly & Coconut Panna Cotta

More fuss-free than the dacquoise - set one layer then the next and it sits in the fridge waiting to be devoured.

The Ultimate Cheat's Dessert

But this crème caramel! It takes the cake! I didn't have to caramelise sugar to a golden brown. No baking of fiddly tiny moulds in a messy water bath, constantly worrying about under- or over-cooking them.

Maggie Beer does it again!

All that I have to do the next time we throw a dinner party is send the boyfriend (he discovered these little beauties) down to our local supermarket to grab some, keep them chilled, pop them out when it's time for dessert and wait for guests to lavish praise.

Maggie Beer first got me hooked here, and then again here. She's got me good this time for her crème caramel is...classic! The caramel is "burnt" to the right bitter sweetness and the vanilla custard is a textural dream. If another cheat served it to me at a dinner party, I wouldn't think it was store-bought. A time-saving idiot-proof dessert that is utterly delicious at AU$4(!) per pop. Why not?

A pretty comprehensive range of products can be found at David Jones' Food Hall but our neighbourhood Woolie's stocks her verjuice and olive oil. Her ice creams and creme brulee we found at our local Duffy Bros. If you feel like cooking, she's got a few books out. x

Chou -
The easy-peasy lemon-squeezey kind? x

Katlin -
Haha! You are always hungry and eating yet sooo tiny! x

Dreamer -
Ummm...because like Katlin, you are a growing child and is always hungry?

Oh, wow, Dreamer! You'll go down in history as the high-school girl who popped my cherry...of the blog award category kind. Thank you for the lemonade stand and for reading. You made my day. x

I need more sugar like a hole in the head, but that Maggie Beer stuff looks delish. I must send Cade off in search of some for me.

And here I thought this was going to be adultery-appropriate desserts. Much less scandalous than I expected!

Send Cade to Duffy Bros at Oxford Square. The creme brulee is next to the yoghurt, according to the sweet but sweets-hating boyfriend who first discovered it when I sent him down for some sour cream.

I'm sorry. But diet? You?! No! From the photos that I've seen of you, I hope it's a eat-healthy diet and not a lose-weight one.

Haha! You've got a cheeky mind! Hmmm...what would sordid affair-havers have for dessert?

See, these do not look easy or like a "cheat's" version. You're way too clever for this birdy. xx

OK, I get it now. The Maggie Beer creme caramel is the cheat's dessert, right?

Sigh. I'm slow today.

But I DO miss Maggie Beer over here in London - especially her pates and quince paste! xx

Hey Top Bird,
Haha! The cold must be getting to you - yes, the Maggie Beer is the cheat. But the other two are easy too. Honest. I'll send you recipes if you want. They are great for when it gets warmer where you are. xx
